It was recently announced that STAR WARS: EPISODE VII would officially be released on 18th December, 2015, which is different to STAR WARS usually taking the summer blockbuster route. Now speaking to MTV, director J.J. Abrams has revealed that he’s happy with the later release.

He said, “I will say that it is an infinitely better situation now than when they were saying they wanted it in the summer. Before I even came onto the project, before I was brought on, they were talking about 2015 and they made this announcement very early on, which I understand. And I understand why they’d want that, but it didn’t necessarily have anything to do with the reality of where anyone was creatively. So I think that it’s a hugely important thing that that comes first, and that a release date is great, but you have to release something great. So to me, the new release date is a huge improvement.”

At present, EPISODE VII’s script is being worked on by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, with very little known as to the film’s plot just yet. With Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford all expected to return, it’s believed that the film will focus on a new generation of heroes and villains.

Production is expected to begin next year, with an 18th December, 2015 release planned.
