In a move that has set virtual tongues wagging, ANT-MAN director Edgar Wright has taken to his website to casually post the below image:

Accompanied with the caption “Homework,” the image isn’t too controversial, right?

Well, those eagled-eyed Marvel fanatics out there will recognise the image as being taken from an episode of the animated AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES titled TO STEAL AN ANT-MAN. That particular episode was based on the MARVEL PREMIERE #47 book, which focused on Scott Lang stealing the Ant-Man gear of Hank Pym and using it to commit crimes. Pym would later give Lang his blessing to take on the Ant-Man mantle.

Now whilst Paul Rudd has been officially confirmed as playing Ant-Man in Wright’s movie, there hasn’t been even the slightest mention of Hank Pym… or any human alias for that matter. Could it be that Rudd will be playing Scott Lang rather than the presumed role of Henry Pym?

Adding further to this issue, it’s well-known that an early version of Wright and Joe Cornish’s ANT-MAN script featured both Lang and Pym, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige describing the film as a “heist movie” at one point. The comments from Feige were from over a year ago, and a lot can change in that time, so they have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Still, Wright’s posting of the above image has certainly stirred the fanboys up.

Will we see Hank Pym as Ant-Man? Will we see Scott Lang as Ant-Man? Will we see them both?

Expect to hear more on this as it develops.

At present, ANT-MAN is set to kick things off for Marvel’s Phase Three of films on 31st July, 2015.
