…in the shapely form of Black Widow. That’s right, instead of giving Scarlett Johansson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanova her own movie at last, she’ll once again play second fiddle to Downey Jnr’s Tony Stark. We can only hope that Marvel Studios know what they’re doing this time, as we all know what a confused mess IRON MAN 2 was. That said, something tells us with THE AVENGERS finally out of their system Widow will actually serve a purpose this time out, rather than her presence merely acting as a commercial for this summer’s superhero extravaganza.

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Marvel Avengers Assemble

This news comes from a leaked casting call for extras, which originated at featurefilmcasting.com. Other deets these guys may be getting a severe slapped wrist (or worse*) off Marvel Studios for include:

+ Gwyenth is back. (But that’s a no-brainer.)

+ Don Cheadle will rock the War Machine armour once more. (Far from a sure thing that one. Just ask Terrance Howard.)

+ At least one set-piece will require 1000 extras. Ooooo!

+ And their choice of synopsis is a little on the candid side…

In this third installment of the Marvel Studios film adaptations of “Iron Man”, the storyline is being described by writer/director Shane Black as being a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villains. Black stated “the studio wasn’t happy with the result of Iron Man 2, a result that pretty much came about due to a rushed production in an attempt to hit a release date rather than simply make a good film, but I digress. Iron Man 3 will not be another ‘two men in iron suits fighting each other’.

The thing that elevates our excitement over this sequel above anything else is the presence of Shane Black. Black’s dialogue fits Downey perfectly, as anybody who’s seen 2005’s excellent crime comedy KISS KISS BANG BANG will attest. We can’t wait to see what the duo bring to the table. But yeah, easy on the robots hitting each other finale. It got old fast.

IRON MAN 3 will begin filming this September with a release date set for May 3rd 2013. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE opens April 27th.

* We’re serious, these Marvel Studios guys mean business! A little bird told us recently that they’re a little overzealous about this kind of stuff, and an article we ran a while back might have got a highly respected member of the production team fired *cough Hydraulx interview cough*. Not cool Marvel, not cool.)
