Roland Emmerich has been talking about what we can expect from the sequels to 1996’s INDEPENDENCE DAY. That’s right, sequels. ID FOREVER PART I & II (inspiring titles aren’t they!) will take place 20 years after the original film and will see alien reinforcements finally arrive following a distress call sent out by the aliens from the first film (possibly calling for more ships and an antivirus software upgrade?).

Emmerich explains; “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. Humans have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because its organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.”

Emmerich has written the two scripts along with original co-writer Dean Devlin and has asked WHITE HOUSE DOWN (Emmerich’s upcoming White House action film) writer-producer James Vanderbilt to give it a rewrite.

Along with Emmerich and Devlin, Bill Pullman will be returning for the sequels too, but original cast members are still waiting to be confirmed (come on, Adam Baldwin) at this time. According to Emmerich the storylines will focus on a new generation of characters including Smith’s stepson from the first film all grown up (and probably the President’s daughter too).

The director went on to say that the first film will end on a cliffhanger that will offer the humans a small amount of success before finally overcoming again in the final film (so no bleak downer endings here then). But if you’re expecting more of the same mass destruction of cities (the humans have rebuilt), Emmerich teases that “The Aliens also do different things.”

So, does the world need a sequel to INDEPENDENCE DAY? Is there something else to say in the sequels or was it all pretty much covered in the first one? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
