With last year’s SHARKNADO generating a massive amount of online buzz, it didn’t take long for a sequel to get given the go-ahead. Wittily(?) titled SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE, the follow-up will begin shooting as soon as 13th February. Syfy and The Asylum, the guys behind a whole host of the low-budget creature features we’ve seen over the last few years, have now announced that two of the first movie’s stars, Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, will be returning to action.

Discussing the sequel, Syfy’s Thomas Vitale said, “SHARKNADO was an extraordinary ‘perfect storm’ which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about SHARKNADO! By reassembling the creative team – and dropping sharks onto New York’s iconic sites – we’re unleashing yet another ‘fin’ wave of shark-mania.”

The Asylum’s Paul Bales added, “We’re thrilled to be able to bring back the talent that made SHARKNADO a hit. Can lightning strike twice? I don’t know, but it’s a scientific fact that you’re more likely to be killed in lightning than by a shark. This film will have lightning and sharks, so that’s got to count for something.”

For anyone who’s seen the first movie – review here – there’s just so much that is just so wrong, mainly coming from Tara Reid’s direction. That said, the movie does have a certain enjoyable charm to it despite being a load of utter tripe for the most part.

As well as Ziering and Reid, SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE will also see director Anthony Ferrante and screenwriter Thunder Levin return. At present, the sequel is set to premiere on Syfy this July.
