Hot on the heels of the recent announcement that Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan will be revisiting their Roles as Professor X and Magneto in Bryan Singer’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, it is now being reported that Hugh Jackman is in negotiations to reprise his role as Wolverine in the upcoming superhero flick. Jackman appeared in a cameo role as Wolverine in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, as well as the original X-MEN trilogy, the first two of which were directed by Bryan Singer, the current director of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

While the first film in the more recent X–MEN series, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, mostly ignored the previous movies, there were a few shout outs to fans of the original trilogy as well as Jackman’s cameo.

Fans hoping for more of Wolverine than a quick bar scene this time could be in for a treat, as the comic’s storyline that originates the movie’s title, starts in a future where most mutants have been apprehended or slain by giant robots known as Sentinels and an older Wolverine (amongst other surviving mutants), must send fellow mutant Kitty Pryde’s mind back in time to her younger self to prevent a key moment in history that leads to this nightmare future.

As Kitty Pryde has already appeared in the original trilogy as played by Ellen Paige, the plot will probably undergo some changes, however the time travel and alternate timeline shenanigans involved should allow Director Bryan Singer to tie the old and new movies together in a similar fashion to how J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of STAR TREK was able to pay homage to the original movies while moving ahead with new storylines and a younger cast.

The recent hiring of Mark Millar (THE AUTHORITY, THE ULTIMATES, ULTIMATE FANTASITC FOUR, WANTED, KICK –ASS) as a consultant by Fox Studios to help maintain the cinematic universe for Fox Studios’ Marvel properties (currently consisting of the X-MEN franchise and an upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR reboot) could also help tie everything together in a way satisfying to the fans.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits cinemas July 18th 2014.
