As we reported back in December, Hugh Jackman was in talks to star in the forthcoming Peter Pan film, well talks are over and the Jackman is in! After the news that Batman vs. Superman’s release date shifted, many were whipped up into a frenzy this past week and it is easy to forget that Joe Wright’s currently untitled Peter Pan project also shifted release dates. The film was originally set to fly into cinemas on the 26th June 2015 but now has moved to the 17th July 2015. That being said, the Batman vs. Superman news was likely to over shadow anything, with the possible exception of Star Wars Episode VII news. However this shifted release date for Peter Pan’s next cinema outing is a Tinkerbell sized titbit next to this casting confirmation. As it has just been announced that Hugh “The Wolverine” Jackman is set to star in the film and as big bad Blackbeard.

This is an interesting notion, considering Jackman’s usual casting being in a heroic mould, though there have been a few exceptions (his recently flawed character in Prisoners for instance). Greg Silverman, (President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production) and Sue Kroll, (President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution) of Warner Brothers, made the announcement this weekend. Silverman was openly enthused about Jackman’s involvement, stating, “Hugh Jackman always delivers indelible performances that resonate with audiences. We know he will create a Blackbeard who will be a powerful presence in this original Peter Pan adventure”.

This Peter Pan project currently awaits an official title but will be an origin story of the classic character. Director Joe Wright (Hanna) is at the helm, Jackman is now set to star and Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift) is on screenplay duties. The new Peter Pan certainly has the potential to be magical entertainment but lets hope it fares better than the last live-action Peter Pan did back in 2003 (P.J. Hogan’s accomplished adaptation, which financially flopped). Although this release date pits the film against Marvel’s Ant-Man so expect the hooks and antennas to come out!

Joe Wright’s Pan project is released on the 17th of July 2015.
