Another day, another Guillermo del Toro next project story! This time though, it’s the interesting news that Universal has brought in Eternal Sunshine scriptwriter Charlie Kaufman to pen the script for a re-adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s classic sci-fi novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

While it’s true that we already have a superb adaptation in the form of George Roy Hill’s 1972 classic, the prospect of these two working on a new adaptation is certainly a mouth watering prospect.

“Charlie and I talked for about an hour-and-a-half and came up with a perfect way of doing the book. I love the idea of the Tralfamadorians to be ‘unstuck in time,’ where everything is happening at the same time. And that’s what I want to do,” del Toro said, adding, “It’s just a catch-22. The studio will make it when it’s my next movie, but how can I commit to it being my next movie until there’s a screenplay? Charlie Kaufman is a very expensive writer!”

To be fair, del Toro has a lot on his plate if the Hellboy 3, Justice League Dark, Frankenstein or even (the long mooted) The Champions remake rumours are remotely true, not to mention the sequels in the pipeline should Pacific Rim be a box office hit.

We’ll keep you posted on all things del Toro as they develop, which will probably be a completely different project by then!
