With James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY set to hit later this year, there have been varying reports as to just how connected that movie will be to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whilst the space opera doesn’t seem too connected to current events in the MCU, director Gunn has revealed that it will tie in with the events of THE AVENGERS 3.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed, “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is definitely connected to AVENGERS 3.”
The director added that Thanos – the grinning chap seen at the end of Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLE – will play an important role in the origins of several characters that will be seen in GUARDIANS. He said, “Star Lord was abducted from Earth at age 8 and raised in a group of thieves called the Ravagers. He’s good with the ladies and a little bit of a dick and very lucky. Thanos slaughtered Gamora’s family and Nebula’s, then raised them together as siblings. They were bio-engineered to become living weapons. So he’s really good at killing people.”
Ever since Thanos’ post-credits appearance in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, many have speculated that he will be the ‘big bad’ of THE AVENGERS 3. Could the Guardians team end up in some sort of team-up with the Avengers for a third outing of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Could that rumour of Thanos slaying the Guardians team come to fruition? THE AVENGERS 3 is a long way off, so that gives plenty of time for the speculation to flow.
Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel (in mo-cap and voice form), Bradley Cooper (in voice form), Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Karen Gillan, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Gregg Henry and Michael Rooker, James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is currently set for a 1st August release.
