Sorry Jason Momoa fans, the recent reports that he’ll be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe family have sadly proven false – the eyeliner-loving thesp will NOT be playing Drax the Destroyer in the upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie. Instead, it’s now been confirmed that the role will go to, drum roll please… this guy:

Don’t feel bad if you have no idea who that is, I hold my hands up, neither did I. Turns out, the oily fella you see before you is Dave Bautista, an incredibly popular former WWE badass turned legitimate actor. If you don’t happen to be into the whole wrestling scene, then perhaps you’ve seen his work in such movies as THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS or THE SCORPION KING 3 (yes, there was a SCORPION KING 2). …Ok, perhaps not.

Now Marvel Studios haven’t steered us wrong once in terms of casting, so we’re looking forward to seeing what Bautista brings to the table as Drax, a tough-as-nails former human hell-bent on bringing down Thanos (aka that grinning purple dude at the end of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE).

Joining Bautista is PARKS AND RECREATION’s Chris Pratt as Star-Lord (great choice), who is the only other member of the five-strong team cast at present. Expect more announcements soon…

James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens August 2014.
