Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is due to hit screens in the second half of this year, and many presumed that the oddball team were being given the big-screen treatment purely to act as a fodder for Thanos. What better way to set Thanos up for THE AVENGERS 3 than by having him butcher a whole team of heroes, right? Well, it appears that those initial thoughts may have been a tad premature.

It’s been reported by JoBlo that Marvel Studios and Disney are actually looking at doing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2. Not only that, they’ve pencilled in a release date of 6th May, 2016. That space is currently reserved for one of Marvel’s untitled Phase Three films, with DOCTOR STRANGE and BLACK PANTHER presumed to be competing for that spot. It’s also worth noting that a certain MAN OF STEEL sequel is released on that date, too.

Another sign that Marvel Studios is looking to get behind the Guardians is that the team are set to get their own Disney XD cartoon show, which is being developed for a 2015 release.

Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, though, for we have the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY upon us on 1st August. Directed by James Gunn, the movie features Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel providing voice and motion-capture performance for Groot, and Bradley Cooper as the voice of gun-toting wise-ass Rocket Racoon. Joining them are Michael Rooker, Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Gregg Henry and Glenn Close.
