Ignoring Joe Dante’s continued desire to get a third entry off the ground, Warner Bros – in their infinite wisdom – are reportedly closer to pulling the trigger on a remake instead.

Talks are being held with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment (producers of the 1984 classic), who Warner Bros need on board to make it happen. Let’s hope they tell them where to stick it – they’re on dangerous ground monkeying with a franchise so revered as this. How many of us watched the original just a few short weeks ago? It’s mandatory Christmas viewing and hasn’t aged a day. Imagine trying to improve on the design of Gizmo? It can’t be done. Oh, and forget the use of puppetry and animatronics – the creatures here will all be CGI. I’m getting angry just typing this.

Now this story did originate from Vulture, just as the debunked Zack Snyder Star Wars rumour* did a few days ago, so you really should take this news with a pinch of salt. It’s been discussed many times before, and will be again even if talks fall apart, so there’s still time for them to see sense and invite Dante back for a third.

* Which they’re still standing by.
