Following the recent passing of Harold Ramis, reports surfaced to say that the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 was to undergo some moderate rewrites. Now comes word that director Ivan Reitman has decided against helming this third installment.

Speaking to Deadline, Reitman, who directed the previous two GHOSBUSTERS movies, revealed, “We now have a draft that is very good, that the studio is very excited about. It’s a version of GHOSTBUSTERS that has the originals in a very minor role. When I came back from Harold’s funeral, it was really moving and it made me think about a lot of things. I’d just finished directing DRAFT DAY, which I’m really happy with and proud of. Working on a film that is smaller and more dramatic was so much fun and satisfying. I just finally met with Amy and Doug Belgrad when I got back. I said I’d been thinking about it for weeks, that I’d rather just produce this GHOSTBUSTERS. I told them I thought I could help but let’s find a really good director and make it with him. So that’s what we’ve agreed will happen.”

So, whilst Reitman won’t be directing, he’ll act as a producer on the long-debated threequel and will also play a part in choosing the movie’s director. As for the minor role that the original Ghostbusters will play, nothing further is known on that just, and there’s still no definitive answer on whether Bill Murray was be returning. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, Murray has been in, out and shaking it all about.

One other point of note, Reitman also went on to confirm that the current aim is for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 to start shooting early next year.

Expect more on this as it develops.
