With last week bringing the first official look of Henry Cavill’s Superman return for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, now comes some rumours about some secondary villains who are said to be appearing in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL follow-up. According to Latino-Review, Victor Zsasz, David Cain and Morgan Edge will all have roles in the Batman/Superman mash-up, as may Amanda Waller.

Victor Zsasz, often referred to as just Mr. Zsasz, actually appeared briefly in Christopher Nolan’s BATMAN BEGINS, played by James frontman Tim Booth, although this new cinematic DC world has no ties to Nolan’s trilogy. The character of Zsasz is a twisted serial killer who records each kill by scarring his own body with tally marks so that he can keep track of the numbers who’ve fallen at his hand. It’s said that Zsasz will be used early on in BATMAN V SUPERMAN as some fodder for the Caped Crusader to take down.

Whilst a lot of casual comic book fans will likely be aware of Mr. Zsasz, David Cain is a villain who may not be the most well-known. Away from being the father of Cassandra Cain, aka Batgirl/Black Bat, he is also one of the world’s most lethal assassins, often taking out people close to the heart of the Dark Knight. Whereas Zsasz is a crazed lunatic, Cain is more measured and often used as a ‘gun for hire.’ The word at the moment is that David Cain will be hired by Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, although who will be in his sights isn’t known at this stage.

Similar to David Cain, Morgan Edge is another character that casual fans may not be fully aware of. In his various incarnations he’s generally played as a media mogul or business tycoon, often with Superman the target of his propaganda and hyperbole. In BATMAN V SUPERMAN, he will seemingly be used as a PR rep for LexCorp and the agenda that Lex has in place. Like Zsasz, Edge is another character that has appeared in live-action before, with Rutger Hauer playing the character in SMALLVILLE.

Just as Edge appeared in SMALLVILLE, so did Amanda Waller. Played by Pam Grier in The CW’s ‘young Superman’ show, the character also appeared in the Ryan Reynolds-starring GREEN LANTERN, where she was played by Angela Bassett. Regular viewers of ARROW will similarly have seen Cynthia Addai-Robinson appear as Waller during the show’s recent Season 2. Waller is often an adversary of the Justice League for a variety of reasons, and it’s said she’ll be a senator of sorts in BATMAN V SUPERMAN, with some suggestion even claiming that this is the role that Holly Hunter will be playing.

Treat all of the above as purely rumour for now, but it certainly sounds interesting. Given how the only confirmed ‘big bad’ of BATMAN V SUPERMAN is Lex Luthor at this point, one would think that there’d maybe need to be a larger physical threat to our heroes in the movie, with Doomsday one villain that’s regularly rumoured to be a part of Snyder’s movie. Even if Zsasz, Cain, Edge or Waller do appear, as mentioned, there’ll be playing supporting roles at best.

It’s also worth noting that various outlets have managed to get hold of a BATMAN V SUPERMAN script, which does involve the four characters mentioned in this piece. Thing is, other reports claim that this script is a fake script that Warner Brothers purposely leaked out to throw people off the scent of what’s really going down in DAWN OF JUSTICE. Further to that, it’s said that the WB actually paid Kevin Smith to pen this supposedly faux script. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out and what actually ends up being true, especially with Comic-Con just around the corner.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is currently set for a global 6th May, 2016 release.
