Ever since Felicity Jones was announced as joining Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 in an unknown role, the strong rumour was that she would be playing Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat. Well, Jones has now gone on record to confirm that she will indeed by playing a villain in Webb’s Spidey sequel, although it appears that it won’t be Felicia Hardy.

Asked by ViewLondon about her role in the film, Jones said, “It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend – I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.”

This latest reveal definitely throws a spanner into the works when it comes to the Black Cat idea. Felicia Hardy has never dated Harry or Norman Osborn, so that effectively rules that character out. The next point is, if there is to be a Goblin somewhere down the line (there most definitely will be), then surely Norman Osborn will be the first to hop on to the glider. Would Jones’ character be in a relationship with Norman? Would Harry be the first Goblin instead? Definitely a head scratcher.

At this point, the most logical character for Jones to be playing would appear to be Lily Hollister. In the comic books, Lily is a girlfriend of Harry Osborn’s. She accidently becomes infected by the Goblin serum, which turns her into Menace; a female villainous Goblin. Would Webb really be looking to bring such a character into his Spidey world?

All of this could simply be a case of Jones getting confused, possibly just playing with the interviewer, or it could be that Marc Webb isn’t afraid to make changes to the Spider-Man mythos for his upcoming film?

All will be revealed when THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released on 2nd May, 2014, although I’d expect to be hearing a lot more on the film before then.
