Hollywood’s current obsession with fairy tale adaptations continues with the news that Disney’s long gestating MALEFICENT is close to finding its princess in the form of the excellent Elle Fanning (SUPER 8).

In an interesting switcheroo, the film will retell the story of SLEEPING BEAUTY, but this time from the point of view of the villain, here portrayed by Angelina Jolie.

Maleficent herself, Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Tim Burton was originally attached to direct but dropped out in favour of FRANKENWEENIE, leaving it open for Robert Stromberg to take over. Stromberg is a already an accomplished Academy Award winning visual effects designer, and this will mark his directorial debut.

With so many fairy tale projects heading our way, kicking off soon with the first of what seems like fifty Snow White movies, MIRROR MIRROR (April 6th), it’s fair to wonder whether they’ll even be an audience for this come 2014…
