Despite its trouble production history (an initial sky-high budget that had to be slashed and rumours  of reshoots later denied by Disney) the extended Super Bowl trailer for Gore Verbinki’s THE LONE RANGER seems to promise a western adventure very much in keeping with the tone of the PIRATES OF CARIBBEAN MOVIES, although the production team might be better served by referencing the PIRATES movies by name rather than just showing the Johnny Depp styled pirate skull and crossbones logo from those movies that they have been using in the trailers so far.

The latest trailer showcases the action and comedy of the film and at the verty least it has the look of a “proper” western but it’s still hard to tell if this is going to be big hit this summer. Johnny Depp still looks and acts pretty goofy as Tonto but at least it looks like the cast are having fun if nothing else and the trailer does highlight some relatively interesting new set pieces, most of these involving train escapes and gun fights, interspersed with shots of Armie Hammer and Depp striding purposefully across “The West”.
