Say what you will about Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, but it at least stood by the comic books and introduced us to Gwen Stacy as Peter’s first love. Now, as soon as it was announced the Webb’s movie was to go the Gwen route, fans wondered if the cinematic Gwen would have the same fate as the comic book Gwen. Speaking to On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Emma Stone, the series’ Gwen Stacy, has been talking about what will happen to the character.

Stone said, “I think the intention the whole time has been to tell Gwen’s story as closely to the comic as possible. That’s been the director’s idea and the studio’s idea. We’ll see if that comes to fruition.”

Right, I was going to label certain points of this post as spoilers, but does discussing a 40-year-old comic arc really constitute spoiler territory?

In the main 616 comic book universe, one of the most tragic moments of Peter Parker’s life, right up there with the death of Uncle Ben, is the death of Gwen Stacy. With Gwen thrown to her death by the Green Goblin, Spidey catches her with his webbing thinking he has saved the day. Unfortunately Gwen is dead, with a broken neck. Not sure whether the Goblin had broken her neck or if the whiplash from the sudden web-assisted stop had done the damage, this is one of the things that truly haunts Peter throughout his life.

Throughout the years and the differing continuities and universes, Gwen has been alive, dead, a clone, and even Carnage. So, whilst one would assume that THE AMAZING SPIDER’s Gwen will eventually bite the bullet, it all depends on how literal Emma Stone is talking.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released in the UK on 18th April, with the global release currently set for 2nd May. After that, it’s already been confirmed that we will be getting THE AMAZING SPIDER-Man 3, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 and two spin-off films in the form of VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX.
