So what’s next for Edgar Wright after his departure from Marvel’s ANT-MAN project? Well, according to Deadline, he may well be returning to his KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER project we last reported on in 2012, which will star filmland’s hardest working actor Johnny Depp. (Seriously Johnny, take a break. You’ve earned it.)

Often touted as the X-FILES’ predecessor, indeed its creator Chris Carter has often cited the show as a major influence, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER started life as a couple of made-for-TV movies before being granted a series of its own. Starring Darren McGavin as tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak, this little gem of a 1970’s TV series died after only one season, despite having such genre powerhouse writers like Richard Matheson. But it soon gained cult status due to its irascible yet personable lead character and it’s quirky fusion of horror and sci-fi.

It was briefly resurrected back in 2005 with Stuart Townsend before disappearing into oblivion, but then it ignored much of what made the original series so enjoyable.

Hopefully Wright’s version will be respectful to its original source material, but it will no doubt retain the humour and quirkiness with Mr Depp in the mix.

More as it develops…
