If any of you were in any doubt as to Disney’s integrity concerning their approach to the new STAR WARS movies, prepare to be comforted! In a new interview with Fanhattan, legendary poster artist Drew Struzan has revealed that the House of Mouse have already approached him about the possibility of him crafting the poster for EPISODE VII. This is, of course, wonderful news for those of us old enough to remember a time when poster art wasn’t just knocked out on Photoshop in an hour. Name your ten favourite films of all time – we’re betting Struzan was responsible for a whole bunch of their posters! Not only did he provide the iconic art for all six (nine if you count the Special Edition re-releases) STAR WARS movies, but he was also behind the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy, each INDIANA JONES flick, HARRY POTTER, THE GOONIES, BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA and HELLBOY… to name but a few. (In fact, don’t take it from us, check out his official site.)

Told you it was great news! There’s just one thing. He retired in 2008.

“I got a couple calls already this week on Star Wars from Disney.” he told Fanhattan, “Oh my god, I’m trying to be retired! You know, I spent 35 years painting Star Wars. I painted Star Wars before most of you were born! But I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night. If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible.”

Seems pretty positive doesn’t it! Add to that the fact Struzan has never taken his retirement too seriously, contributing many new pieces here and there over the last four years, including some great stuff for THE WALKING DEAD and, most recently, BEING HUMAN.

Fingers crossed he can make the time. Now, if only Disney could get around to picking their director!

STAR WARS EPISODE VII is released in 2015. To read the rest of the interview (and we highly recommend you do, it’s ace!) head over to Fanhattan.
