The fourth Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, came with the tagline “it ain’t ogre till it’s ogre”, well it seems it might not be ogre yet. As DreamWorks Animation’s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has hinted at the grouchy green fella’s next cinematic outing. Starting way back in 2001 (yes Shrek is nearly 13 years old!), the franchise has been far from mal-ogre-rous (sorry), spawning various seasonal short film spin-offs and 3 sequels, but with varying critical success. 2007s Shrek The Third was considered the start of the decline and likewise 2010s Shrek Forever After was met with mixed response. However Katzenberg seems to have a solid strategy moving forward.

In an interview with the FOX Business Network (source: Variety), he said “We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest,” and continuing, “But I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.” Despite the later instalment’s more mixed reception, the Shrek films are big money, grossing $2.9 Billion to date collectively, so this is hardly a shock. After Shrek the Musical, the upcoming Shrek amusement park in London and a whole manner of other merchandise, it seems Shrek is indeed not done. Although Katzenberg’s idea of resting is rather different to ours!
