You’d be hard pressed to find a stranger cultural icon than Godzilla. Originally created as a metaphor for an atom bomb, turned into a children’s hero, turned into an anti-hero, and regarded by directors as Japan’s equivalent to the James Bond films, he’s changed a bit over the years. The productions involving the character have done everything from being pure science fiction schlock to having more meaningful messages behind the rubber suits. It seems now that someone wants to examine this from the beginning.

Spanish director and producer Jonathan Bellés is opting to create a non-profit documentary titled Godzilla & Hiroshima: The Dawn of the Kaiju Eiga which will focus primarily upon how the character came about. Thus far only basic details have been revealed but the documentary will involve travelling to a number of different countries and interviewing critics and filmmakers. A few such figures in Spain have been detailed on Bellés’ production company website, including several experts on Japanese cinema and a stop motion animation producer. The trailer also features fan favourites King Ghidora, Mothra, Rodan and Gigan, suggesting it will at least cover some Shōwa era films.

Bellés has also been quoted in the blog of writer Armand Vaquer, writer of The Monster Movie Fan’s Guide To Japan, that it will include monsters and characters besides the Godzilla franchise. Examples named are Ultraman and Gamera. Furthermore the article states Bellés wishes to “travel to Hiroshima to visit the Peace Memorial Museum mainly.”

The hope is to have the documentary completed by Summer 2014 so it’s still a long way off. Until then enthusiasts can watch the teaser trailer and keep an eye on his website for updates.
