No matter how much praise it might have garnered, you won’t be seeing a sequel to The Babadook. This somewhat refreshing piece of news comes today, straight from the mouth of the director who helmed the finest horror film (and one of the finest films in our opinion) of 2014. Horror seems to be overpopulated with sequels nowadays but Jennifer Kent has adamantly stated that you will not be seeing a Babadook 2…ever. In an interview with IGN, she was asked about the possibility of a follow-up and had the following to say:

“The good news is, I had the foresight to make sure that my producer and I owned the rights to any sequels. The reason for that is I will never allow any sequel to be made, because it’s not that kind of film. I don’t care how much I’m offered; it’s just not going to happen. ”

While it is sad in some ways that such a haunting screen presence won’t be able to terrorise audiences again, Kent’s film ended just right. Plus it is very refreshing to see a debut director not just sell their property to the highest bidder. It is rare to see such a definitive statement from a filmmaker, so we’d say unless Kent comes up with a mindblowing idea in the future, Mister Babadook will remain in the shadow. Still, we’ll always have those nightmares popping up to keep us company!

The Babadook is still in select cinemas and will be released in the UK on Blu-Ray/DVD on the 16th of February, 2015.
