Despite us not even getting past next year’s
The Divergent Series: Insurgent yet, it seems that Lionsgate are keen to lay the groundwork for what comes next in The Divergent Series by naming the director and release dates for further sequels. After Neil Burger’s Divergent did good business last year (despite a mixed response), the series based on Veronica Roth’s novel series, is set to go all Twilight/Hunger Games on our asses and try to be the next teen novel-to-screen craze. And after only seeing a teaser, thus far, for next year’s sequel (the full trailer lands December 12th apparently), Variety reports that Lionsgate has already confirmed Insurgent director Robert Schwentke, will be back to helm The Divergent Series: Allegiant- Part 1 (because splitting your last movie into parts is the groovy thing nowadays) in 2016. He isn’t confirmed yet for Part 2 but if things go well, then why not?

Hopefully this piece of news means they were impressed by the results of his work on Insurgent (too many …gents here). Indeed Schwentke has delivered some fun action films in the past with the likes of RED and Flightplan, however he did also helm the disastrous comic book adaptation R.I.P.D, so approach with caution. Joking aside, lets hope The Divergent Series expands nicely on the big screen because truly successful teen aimed entertainment is hard to accomplish these days (see The Host or Vampire Academy), let alone entertainment of this kind with a potential social message. In the meantime we await the results of The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which stars the likes of Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Naomi Watts, Ansel Elgort, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney and Kate Winslet. If it is a hit, then the wheels are well in place for the next dystopian development in this (rather unexpected) series.

Insurgent rolls into cinemas on the 20th of March 2015, whereas The Divergent Series: Allegiant Parts 1 and 2, land on the 18th of March 2016 and the 24th of March 2017, respectively.
