Guillermo del Toro Earmarks Benedict Cumberbatch

Scientists believe that the world could end in any number of ways: the Big Crunch, pollution, nuclear war, meteor strike and so on ad nauseum. This writer personally believes it will end when Guillermo del Toro consumes everything in an insatiable creative orgy.

He isn’t happy unless he’s got at least 4 plates on the spin and it seems he’s already planning a future adaptation of Mary Shelley’s FRANKENSTEIN, because why wouldn’t you when you’re only involved in 90% of everything kicking off in the geekdom sphere.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, del Toro admitted that he’d want SHERLOCK star and Hans Gruber II, Benedict Cumberbatch, to star should it ever actually come into existence.

It’s been (haltingly) in production for several years but del Toro keeps postponing it so he can be part of everything else in the world. In 2009, there were reportedly test shoots with the Pale Man of PAN’S LABYRINTH himself, Doug Jones, in the monster’s role.

Whether or not the film ever comes to fruition, Cumberbatch is a good shout having previous experience as both the titular doctor and his monster in Danny Boyle’s stage adaptation.

It’s a popular time for all things Frankenstein, with a Daniel Radcliffe led currently-untitled film due for release in 2014 and I, FRANKENSTIEN – starring Aaron Eckhart and Bill Nighy – also due out next year.
