Judging from the recent promotional art and trailers, it appears that Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn is to play a rather large part in Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. As well as heading up Oscorp due to his father being incapacitated, the young Osborn will also be taking on the Green Goblin mantle. Speaking to Digital Spy, DeHaan has been discussing the story arc of the troubled Harry.

The actor explained, “When you first meet Harry he’s just graduated from high school, and he has to come back to New York to help deal with Oscorp, and its legacy, and his father. He also sees Peter Parker for the first time in a long time; they were childhood friends. So it’s really about Harry having a friendship with Peter and an allegiance to Peter, but also being the heir apparent to Oscorp and having to deal with that.”

DeHaan added, “It’s becoming very obvious that all of these villains are originating from within Oscorp in one way or the other.  There are things that Harry feels he owes Peter, and things he need from Peter. There are things he feels he needs from Spider-Man, and then there’s his responsibility to Oscorp. It’s a very complicated storyline, really cool and dynamic.”

It was initially presumed that Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn would be taking on the Goblin moniker but that’s on the back burner… for now, at least. That means that Harry Osborn is going to be front and centre for most of Spidey’s problems in Webb’s sequel.

The official synopsis for the sequel reads:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a great conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released globally on 2nd May, but us lucky UK folks get the Spidey-sequel on 18th April.
