Casting has officially begun on the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2011’s RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, with director Matt Reeves (CLOVERFIELD) signing Jason Clarke for an unspecified character (though we’re confident he’ll not be strapping on the lycra and ping-pong balls to play a monkey). The Australian actor recently won widespread acclaim for his role in ZERO DARK THIRTY, though the hardcore genre fans amongst you might recognise him as Ulrich in Paul W.S. Anderson’s DEATH RACE (2008).

While little has been reported about the movie’s plot thus far, THR (who broke the news) seem to be privy to a few interesting narrative nuggets, including the fact that it’s set 15 years later. Here’s what they had to say:

“One focus is on the group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco. Another aspect of the story is the struggle of intelligent ape Caesar, played by a returning Andy Serkis, to maintain dominance over his kingdom.”

Which all sounds good to us, but there’s at least one person who isn’t happy about the current direction – original DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES director (and helmer of RISE) Rupert Wyatt. “I had a take on the sequel which didn’t marry with the Studio’s”, Wyatt revealed recently to WhatCulture.com, confirming what we all suspected in the first place. While we hope for the best for DAWN, we can’t help get a little nervous when studios overpower their creative teams. We’ll find out who knew best when DAWN OF THE PLANET OF APES opens May 23rd 2014.
