Some hate them, some love them and others dip in and out of them. Whatever your camp, the Paranormal Activity franchise has been one of the most unexpectedly profitable and followed in the recent history of the Horror genre. With the arrival of the new Latino themed spin-off (that links up the series mythology) The Marked Ones and October’s upcoming Paranormal Activity 5, the series is still alive and bumping in the night. Since Oren Peli’s 2007 film became an über frightener, the series has continued to grow bigger with every instalment and some of the creators have now commented that an end gaol is in sight.

Director of The Marked Ones, Christopher Landon (in a chat with /Film) said of the series’ progression, “I don’t think Oren realized it then, because when he made the first movie it felt like a stand alone movie, but then when we started making 2 and we started to see the potential and possibility there for a franchise, that’s when the real think tank element came in to play and we really started to throw out crazy ideas. Then, over the course of the last couple movies, we came to a really good, interesting place.”

When asked about the climax of the latest film, Landon gave insight into where the series was heading, he stated, “We’ve always been looking ahead. I’ll say this much. There is a very specific end goal and I’m hoping we have enough time in the franchise to get there. We have a really big idea that’s at the finish line but we need time to get there. So we’re hoping the fans keep coming back and allow us to get them there.

So there you have it, the Paranormal Activity is going to cease at some point but how and when depends on whether this series’ shocking durability with audiences continues. To that end, Paranormal Activity 5 could be a pivotal point in the franchise. Still, despite of many dissenting voices, most Horror series have long since dried up at this point and in spite of any flaws, the activity continues to bring its own interesting mythology. To think it all started with couple Katie and Micah, a camera and some door slamming, just goes to show you don’t need copious knockers and knives to chime with Horror audiences!

Paranormal Activity 5 shakes the chandeliers of UK Cinemas on the 24th of October 2014.
