With Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on the horizon next year, Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, the leader of the Guardians, has been discussing why he signed on for the film.

Speaking to Fandango about what drew him to Star-Lord, Pratt said, “Just the fact that he was part of the Marvel brand was really exciting. I was signed up to do the movie before I was even allowed to read a script, so it wasn’t like something about this particular character that got me to do it. The fact that it was a Marvel movie is what got me to do it.”

He added, “Granted, once I did read it, there were so many things about the character that I love, and one thing is that he’s very much a kid at heart. He’s like a man-child. And I like the idea that’s got a false sense of bravado. Deep down inside he’s lonely and desperate, but on the outside he walks around like he’s big and tough, and I don’t think he does a great job of convincing everybody that he’s not just a scared little child.”

The term “man-child” just has me thinking immediately of Adam Sandler in many of his earlier films. Still, I do enjoy a lot of those films, and I’m hugely looking forward to GUARDIANS regardless.

In Marvel’s space opera, we have Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Vin Diesel doing motion capture and voice work for Groot, and Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket Raccoon. Making up the cast of Gunn’s film are the likes of Michael Rooker, Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Gregg Henry and Glenn Close.

Directed by James Gunn, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is set for a 1st August, 2014 release.
