We reported last week that it appeared Peter Mayhew was set to return as Chewbacca in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Well The Hollywood Reporter now has confirmation that everyone’s favourite Wookiee will be back.

The rumours of Chewie’s return started when the 69-year-old Mayhew recently pulled out of May’s Comicpalooza event. To be held in Houston, Texas between 23rd and 26th May, the event just so happens to coincide with May’s confirmed start date for EPISODE VII to begin filming. That’s for the serious business, with principal shooting having started already.

With Chewbacca now confirmed to return, here’s hoping we get some confirmation from a reliable source or an official word on the returns of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, respectively. Despite a plethora of unofficial words on those particular returns, we’re still to hear anything official on that front. As for new faces, the latest rumours seem to be that Adam Driver, Jesse Plemons, Lupita Nyong’o and John Boyega are likely to be heading to a galaxy far, far away.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is currently scheduled for an 18th December, 2015 release.
