Giving a talk at the Fantasia International Film Festival, director Bryan Singer got on to the topic of his upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Two items of note that came up: the return of Cyclops, and the back-from-the-dead modern-day Charles Xavier.

In terms of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, Singer confirmed that the character will not be returning, something which has disappointed him. Cyke was last seen been seemingly vapourised by Jean Grey in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. Still, with how these things work, I wouldn’t completely rule out a return of James Marsden’s X-Men leader.

As for Professor Charles Xavier, he was last seen, in the modern-day timeline, at least, deceased but seemingly having transferred his mind to another body. Singer gave the explanation for Professor X’s apparent resurrection as “he transferred his consciousness and could possibly construct a body around that consciousness.” Right, so he could build himself a new body, yet chooses to put himself in the same body, in a wheelchair and without the power of his legs? Yeah, smart move, Chuck.

The original DAYS OF FUTURE PAST comic book arc features an alternative future where, as the result of the assassination of a key senator, all mutants are hunted by Sentinels. Kitty Pryde sends her mind back in time to her younger self in order to warn the past so that they can try to avert this future of destruction. The film adaptation of this story looks like it will be Wolverine sent back in time by Kitty’s powers. Gotta pander to that Wolverine crowd…

Forming quite the ensemble cast, the film sees James McAvoy as the younger Professor X, Patrick Stewart as the older Professor X, Michael Fassbender as the younger Magneto, Ian McKellen as the older Magneto, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Halle Berry as Storm, Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, Anna Paquin as Rogue, Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, Daniel Cudmore as Colossus, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Omar Sy as Bishop, Fan Binbing as Blink, Lucas Till as Havok, Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask, and Josh Helman as a young William Stryker. It also seems as if Booboo Stewart will be playing Warpath, with an as yet unconfirmed role for Adan Canto.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will be released on 23rd May, 2014.
