It was of little doubt that Jason would rise again, as confirmed by the next Friday the 13th film’s announced release date a month ago, but Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes has recently (in a discussion with Crave Online) remarked on, not only the further development of Friday the 13th but also 2010’s catastrophic A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. In the talks, Fuller addressed Derek Mears return as Jason, the rumours that the new film will be in found footage format and an update on Freddy Kruger’s return to cinemas. 

When asked about Mears’ return, Fuller said, (in a somewhat alarming first sentence (for fans) “I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream so we’d be lucky to have him”. Fear not, we’re pretty sure Fuller is just being cautious of what he says at this stage, it’s hard to fathom Platinum Dunes not capitalizing on the instantly marketable silhouette of Crystal Lake’s most unruly mask-wearing killer camper.

He continued (addressing the use of found footage), “It’s something that we’re looking at, yeah. I never know because it depends on the story and what the story is. It’s been reported, that’s something that we’re looking into but I can’t tell you definitively that that’s what the movie is… I’m well acquainted with some very loud members of the audience who hate found footage and I understand that. I think for us it’s more about what the story is and what’s the best way to tell it. Until we figure out exactly what the story is for the next Friday the 13th movie, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be.” Again, this is an undeniably vague answer but at the very least Fuller seems to be aware of how negatively some have reacted to the found footage direction for the franchise.

The Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th reboot was hardly groundbreaking but it was fun enough and offered audiences what they expected. On the other hand we have Samuel Bayer’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, which Fuller also addressed. When commenting on the chances of CG Freddy returning he said, “In terms of pure box office, I think that’s our highest grossing film worldwide. I’d love to do another one but I feel that way about all of our films. We don’t jump into these films unless we actually loved the characters or the story. I’d love to make Freddy Krueger movies every couple years. It’d be fantastic”. So now we have a slightly less vague idea than before but one thing is for certain, these iconic Horror characters are not dead yet. Sadly, if you were not a fan of either reboot, it seems that more are certainly on the way- so better dig out those Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street DVD Box Sets! Still, it can’t be worse than 2008’s Prom Night can it? CAN IT?

The next Friday the 13th film is currently scheduled to hack n’ slash the competition on the 13th of March in 2015.
