Jennifer Lynch’s HISSS is possibly one of the toughest movies I’ve ever sat through. Not in the sense that is was at all boundary pushing, I mean it was a dreadfully dull, painfully executed piece of ssshit.

As somebody who was a fan of Lynch’s second movie SURVEILLANCE in 2008, I was hoping that the director would finally be able to step out of the shadow of her father (David) and atone for the cinematic crime that was her 1993 debut BOXING HELENA (though, for me, it was only really the dream ending that killed that movie personally). It wasn’t to be so sadly, with HISSS setting her back to square one with the critics. However, after seeing the newly released trailer for DESPITE THE GODS, I now think I might have been a tad harsh on HISSS. The documentary chronicles the making of the film, shadowing Lynch at all times, and to say the shoot looked troubled is an understatement. Check out the trailer below…

With any luck this will join the ranks of documentaries such as THAT MOMENT: MAGNOLIA DIARIES, Vivian Kubrick’s MAKING THE SHINING and Eleanor Coppola’s HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER’S APOCALYPSE for comprehensive coverage of the blood sweat and tears that go into these things.

That said, I won’t be watching HISSS again in this lifetime or the next (I’ll leave myself a note just to be sure).

As the film itself never even made it to the UK in any capacity, I wouldn’t hold your breath for GODS. But I hear there’s always other avenues.
