Ever since B.J. Novak was cast in Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, fan speculation has been rampant that the unknown role he’s playing will be revealed to be Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus. Well, Webb has now taken to Twitter to confirm that Novak will actually be playing Alistair Smythe.

Alistair Smythe is the son of genius creator of the Spidey-Slayer robots, Spencer Smythe. Alistair becomes a villain in his own right, although it’s still unsure as to just how the character will be portrayed in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.

The official synopsis for Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN follow-up reads:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a great conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Complete with some new, fan-pleasing duds, Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Sally Field as Aunt May. Joining the series, we have Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, Colm Feore as Donald Menken, Martin Csokas as Dr. Kafka, and Felicity Jones in an unconfirmed role. Jones has been heavily rumoured for Felicia Hardy/Black Cat.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released worldwide on 2nd May, although we UK folks get the sequel on 18th April. After that, it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be getting THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 and two spin-off movies in the form of VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX.
