For a while now, it’s been known that BRONSON, DRIVE and GOD ONLY FORGIVES’ Nicolas Winding Refn was trying to get a MANIAC COP remake off the ground. Well the redo has added a writer to its ranks in the form of Ed Brubaker, fresh off penning the script for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. To be developed by Wild Bunch, Refn will serve as a producer, as will the original film’s director, William Lustig. A director for this remake is expected to be announced at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, which happens later this month.

As for the original MANIAC COP, released in 1988, it told the story of a crazed killer cop. Starring Robert Z’Dar, Bruce Campbell and genre vet Tom Atkins, the original movie gathered quite the cult following. So much so, two sequels followed. The less said about them, the better.

This isn’t the first time that MANIAC COP has been up for the reboot treatment, with a 2008 short film developed in order to try and get a full remake off the ground. In no way linked to the short, it appears that the remake is finally now a go.

Expect more on this as it develops.
