Those of you out there raising Younglings are no doubt already very familiar with the outrageously popular cartoon BEN 10, but uber-producer Joel Silver (The MATRIX Trilogy) is counting on the property to penetrate the public consciousness en masse with a big-screen, big-budget franchise starter.

Silver’s been kicking the project around for a little while now, but today comes news of movement with a new writer being brought on board to work on the existing script. Ryan Engle is that writer, who must now deliver a take on the character that will appeal to the widest demographic imaginable and propel the character from kids-only fare to massive summer box office draw. Engle’s quite in demand at the moment, and has landed both New Line’s videogame adaptation of RAMPAGE and comic book adaptation THE NEW WEST since his unproduced screenplay ON A CLEAR DAY wound up on the Hollywood Black List (a yearly collection of the best unproduced scripts).

With a built-in army of fans and merchandise sales that generate billions of dollars a year for Cartoon Network already, expect this thing to be huge when it finally hits (we estimate a 2015 street date at the earliest).

We’ll have more info on the movie as it develops. Oh, almost forgot – for those of you without any little ‘uns running about, BEN 10 tells the tale of a young boy who has the ability to turn into ten different aliens. Via his magic watch. Or something. (Never seen it either.)
