Just as DC ‘finally’ cement their unified cinematic universe with MAN OF STEEL and its upcoming sequel BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN, they take two steps back and announce yet another project based on one of their properties that will operate outside of it. Hell, it’s not even tied canonically with ARROW for crying out loud! Said project is GOTHAM, a new TV series from THE MENTALIST creator Bruno Heller that will chart the early years of Commissioner Gordon, before The Bat showed up and joined in the fight to rid the streets of assholes. Sure, we’ll get to see clashes with early incarnations of certain Bat-villains (of the boring, gangster-based non-costumed types we’d wager), but with a new version of the Dark Knight heading to screens in just two years time, this will all likely be negated the moment Batflek makes his debut. We’re not saying this can’t be a good show, far from it, but it’s a mystifying decision on Warner Bros’ part when they were so close to being able to compete with Marvel Studios, who have developed a formula that makes it essential to go see everything they do (regardless of whether you’re a fan of a certain character or not) so as you can follow the larger narrative.

GOTHAM will air on Fox (if the pilot proves successful), sometime in 2014. Giving them plenty of time to meet up with current DC Cinematic Universe godfathers Zack Snyder & David Goyer (who yesterday revealed he “might” be working on the long mooted JUSTICE LEAGUE movie) and come up with a way to make this canonical. But we just can’t see that happening.
