Whilst attending the recent IRON MAN 3 premiere, Joss Whedon was interviewed by Yahoo!, with talk quickly moving to THE AVENGERS 2. Whedon didn’t give too much away, but may have dropped a potential spoiler towards midway through the chat.

First up, Whedon gave an update on what stage his sequel to the fantastic AVENGERS ASSEMBLE is at. “I have finished a draft I’m redoing it now,” he said. “I think it’s in really good shape. We’re in a very good place.”

With the huge success that AVENGERS ASSEMBLE experienced, the writer/director was asked about the pressures such a sequel brings. He responded, “I try not to think of it as topping it. I try to think of this as its own movie. Sometimes, yeah, I feel pressure, and, by the way, Shane not helping, Iron Man 3 not helping, because I saw this and, man, he really got it right. But when you’re in the story and you’re dealing with these characters that you love, that everybody loves, when you’ve got the new characters sliding in next to them it’s very exciting. Then I don’t feel pressure, it’s like I’m reading my favourite comic.”

Then came the seemingly big reveal on two new characters for the sequel. When pushed on which characters may make an appearance, Whedon let slip, “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favourite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.”

Brother and sister? That pretty much narrows it down straightaway to the duo of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, the children of Magneto. Throughout the years, the characters have appeared as heroes, as villains, in X-Men stories, and as part of the Avengers line-up. Whedon, not to mention Marvel big cheese Kevin Feige, have made no secret that they’re looking to explore the ever-rotating line-up of the Avengers that is so often seen in the comic books. That said, it’s not entirely clear whether the rights to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are with Marvel/Disney or at 20th Century Fox with the X-franchise. At the last count, the two seemed to be firmly on the Disney side.

Regardless of who will appear in the sequel, Whedon at least seems to be enjoying himself. “It’s going really well,” he said. “Eventually someone will explain to me that it’s not and pull me out of my bubble. I’ve been writing and meeting with actors and we’re starting to storyboard, all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun.”

As well as talk of THE AVENGERS 2, Whedon also managed to give an update on where things are at with the AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. He eluded, “Well there’s no update in terms of they haven’t said, ‘Go and make many of these for it shall be on the air.’ We’ve finished the pilot, Agent Coulson is in it, and we will explain why in the pilot. It is wonderful and he is phenomenal in it. We should find out in the very near future whether or not everyone else gets to enjoy it as much as we already have.”

At this stage in time, literally anything could be plausible with THE AVENGERS 2. One thing’s for sure, though: in Whedon we trust.
