Yep. You read that right. ‘ATLANTIC’ RIM. Sigh.

You’ve probably already guessed that this is the latest “mockbuster” from rip-off extraordinaires The Asylum, makers of SNAKES ON A TRAIN, TRANSMORPHERS, PARANORMAL ENITITY, ALMIGHTY THOR, ABRAHAM LINCOLN VS. ZOMBIES and CLASH OF EMPIRES (formerly known as AGE OF HOBBITS!) to name but a few. The studio is notorious for producing cheap riffs on tentpole movies for reasons unknown to anybody but themselves. (Okay, so these things clearly make a sizeable profit, but still…) Who are these movies targeted at?! They’re not even supposed to be parodies! It’s a baffling and ultimately frustrating business model. Why should I care? Because the guys producing these things are clearly talented! They might not have the money to equal their ambition (not that that really matters to true film films), but great scripts cost nothing! If they refocused the budgets for these things and spent time creating their own original properties, who knows what could be accomplished. Sure, they do have original output from time to time, but these are almost always in the MEGA MOLLUSC VS. TITANIC TUNA variety, so the above still applies. Anyway, rant over. Here’s the trailer. Just imagine what they could have done with something like this if they weren’t so desperate to piggyback on Del Toro’s flick and obsessed with marketing it to people who can’t distinguish between the words ‘Pacific’ and ‘Atlantic’.
