As we all know, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have long planned to reunite for the third film in the ‘Three Flavours Cornetto’ (or ‘Blood & Ice Cream’) trilogy started with SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ, but have steadfastly chosen to stay schtum as to what direction it would take. SHAUN gave us a very British take on the zombie mythos, while HOT FUZZ lovingly celebrated the action genre – but what of their third collaboration, THE WORLD’S END? Well, the cat’s (sorta) out of the bag now, as Deadline have just broken details of the movie’s upcoming production. Check out the newly released synopsis and see what you make of it…

20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

Most intriguing! While this certainly backs up old rumours that TWE would be the duo’s ode to apocalypse movies – albeit given a personal, down to Earth twist ala SHAUN – it’s still not clear exactly what will threaten ‘humankind’s future’. Alien invasion? Global warming? Another impending brush with Melancholia? This thing could still go in any number of directions! It’ll be very interesting to see how long Wright & Pegg decide to hold back on the project’s secrets; they’ve done a bang up job so far, and in these times of knowing pretty much every story beat of every upcoming flick vying for our attention *cough, AVENGERS, cough, PROMETHEUS, cough*, we have to applaud them.

Working Title will once again produce, with shooting scheduled to begin as soon as September for a 2013 release. Can’t wait!
