Not content with taking the world of smartphone gaming by storm (not to mention auxiliary merch like T-shirts, plush toys, trading cards, etc), those ANGRY BIRDS are to get their own 3D CG-animated feature film.

Finnish based game developers Rovio are using their substantial influx of cash they’ve garnered since the game launched for just 69p a pop in 2009 to finance the film themselves, and hired ex-Marvel Studios executive David Maisel to produce this and future endeavours. DESPICABLE ME’s John Cohen has now been announced as the movie’s director, with a 2016 release date ear-marked.

While its hardly as preposterous as Hollywood bringing games such as BATTLESHIP, MONOPOLY, ASTEROIDS and KER-PLUNK (probably) to the big screen, you’ve got to wonder how this can really translate. Sure, there’s an in built mythology… but let’s face it, it’s a little on the abstract side. Since when do pigs seek out bird eggs anyway? Why the hell are they green? And since when did they get so good at building fortified structures?! So many questions… so little interest.

An ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS movie however…
