As a reaction to the depressingly low percentage of female talent behind the camera in mainstream horror films, an anthology film named XX has been cooked up that comprises of five segments, each with a woman at the helm.

The directors announced are Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena; Chained), Mary Harron (American Psycho), Karyn Kusama (Girlfight; Jennifer’s Body), Jen & Sylvia Soska (American Mary; Dead Hooker In A Trunk) and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird). Each segment will be written and developed by its director and will also have a female protagonist, and will be linked together by stop motion sequences from Mexican animator Sofia Carrillo, who will also be responsible for the film’s title sequence.

Producer Todd Brown (Los Cronocrímenes; Frankenstein’s Army; The ABCs Of Death) is quoted as saying, “One of the givens of so many horror films has been the objectification of young women, and we thought it was time for a different approach to scaring audiences and letting the female voice be heard.”

Executive procucer Greg Newman (Stake Land; House Of The Devil; The Innkeepers) added, “We know that women make up about half of the audience for horror films, and yet female creative voice has been nearly silent in the horror genre. So we are thrilled about the new and distinct approach that these talented directors will bring to the project.”
