They’re creepy and they’re kooky,

Mysterious and spooky,

They’re all together ooky,

The Addams Family

(Da da da da, click click)

Many of you out there will fondly recall that opening chorus and what better day than Halloween, to report developments on the long discussed reboot of the weird but wonderful family. Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Grandmama, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Cousin Itt and Thing will all be back and once again are to be (re) animated. The Addams Family were created by Charles Addams and started out as characters in a newspaper cartoon for The New Yorker. Since their inception in 1938, The Addams Family has conquered many other mediums and become pop culture icons. The 1960s saw a live-action series that shot the characters to fame (running from 64-66) and since that point Charles Addams’ creations have had their own series of feature films (1991’s Addams Family, 1993’s Addams Family Values, etc.) and a 1992-93 animated series on Cartoon Network (*Cue nostalgic moment where we remember when children’s TV was good).

Well now it seems that the oddball family are back, with the news confirmed today. A few of you may remember that Tim Burton was reported to be working on a stop-motion adaptation; alas plans never came into fruition. However this time, Variety reports that Corpse Bride’s Pamela Pettier is on screenwriting duty for MGM’s animated reboot of the characters. While the live-action films were a morbid joy, it is good to hear The Addams Family is heading back into the animated format. The kooky and silly qualities of the characters and comedy are even better suited by a cartoonish presentation. It is not hard to see why the reboot is going ahead. To this day people click their fingers to Vic Mizzy’s infamous theme and quote the characters. Also with the recent success of the musical stage play, one would say the time is right to return to the doors of the five-times condemned mansion and ring the doorbell. “You Rang?”
