It’s being reported by Variety that Adam Driver is in the final stages of talks to play the lead villain in the upcoming STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

In terms of the role, all that is being said right now is that it is to be similar to that of Darth Vader in the original 1977 movie. We’re guessing that doesn’t mean he’s got a shiny black helmet, more that he’s doing the bidding of a higher power. The same role has previously had Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving linked to it, although it’s claimed that Driver was director J.J. Abrams top choice, with negotiations firmly underway to make it official.

Driver is best known for relatively recent turns in Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN and Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha. Most recently, he’s also apparently one of the front-runners for the Dick Grayson role in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL sequel.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is currently set for an 18th December, 2015 release.

Expect more on this as it develops.
