MGM studios has acquired the rights to Richard Matheson’s novel, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN. The story of Scott Carey, a man who enters an atomic mist while boating (causing disastrous results) was previously made by the late, great special effects whiz and director, Jack Arnold for Universal International in 1957.

Matheson and his son Christian will rewrite the new story updating it to contemporary times.

Matheson’s previous updated works include the Will Smith vehicle, I AM LEGEND and REAL STEEL that starred Hugh Jackman based on Matheson’s TWILIGHT ZONE episode, STEEL.

In the ‘90s, an INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN script was floating around with Eddie Murphy attached and was planned as a comedy that never left the pre-production stages. Then there the 1981 cheese fest THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN directed by former costume designer Joel Schumacher starring Lilly Tomlin. It opened to mixed reviews.

With today’s CGI technology, the film will be visually interesting to watch, but will audiences want to see it? Time will tell…
