We’re used to reporting on the latest YA books to be snapped up by Hollywood, and even in some extreme cases ones that are still months away from being published. But a novel that hasn’t even been finished yet, and is years away from being published at that? Well that’s just taking things too far.

Universal were so enamored by established YA author Julie Kagawa and her latest book series (due to start in 2015!) that they’ve ponied up for the movie rights, with FAST & FURIOUS producer Chris Morgan attached to produce. The story, according to THR who broke the news, tells the tale of teenage “Slayers” (somebody get Joss’s IP lawyer on the phone pronto) infiltrating a small coastal town in order to seek out the mythical creatures that hide amongst its citizens.

Kagawa previously penned THE IRON FEY and BLOOD OF EDEN series, both of which are no doubt also rattling around some Hollywood producer’s desk as we speak.

The best thing you could possibly take from this is: if you’re desperate to get into the film industry, put down that screenplay and get cranking out a YA novel instead. If it’s got a teenage protagonist, some fantasy elements and, most importantly of all, a love triangle, you’ll be dining at The Ivy in no time.
