The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s CELL has a new director in the form of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 helmer Tod Williams.

Cargo Entertainment will produce the film, with John Cusack still attached to star.

For those unfamiliar, King’s story is his take on the very familiar zombie apocalypse scenario, and concerns a mysterious signal called The Pulse which turns everybody who is on their mobile phone at the time of transmission into a gibbering rage monster.

After years of sitting through crappy adaptations of his novels (Darabont aside obviously) it looks like King is getting more involved in the projects himself. He’ll be co-writing the screenplay to CELL with Adam Alleca, whose LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake was (bizarrely) the celebrated author’s second favourite movie of 2009. King is also handled writing duties alongside Brian K. Vaughn (LOST) on the TV adaptation of UNDER THE DOME, premiering in June.

Production on CELL is scheduled to begin in May, so expect a 2014 release.
