Up until very recently, rumours persisted that director Colin Trevorrow, he of the acclaimed indie time-travel comedy SAFETY NOT GAURANTEED (finally released here in the UK December 26th), was a front-runner to direct STAR WARS EPISODE VII. To be honest, the filmmaker brought much of the speculation upon himself by routinely referring to his involvement in a relaunch of a “beloved” sci-fi property (for Disney!) that he couldn’t discuss. He debunked the STAR WARS connection recently (somebody probably had a word in his ear about trying to ride the hype), but chose to stay schtum as to what it actually was. And now the cat is well and truly out of the bag with Variety reporting that Trevorrow is actually attached to, well, you read the headline so I guess suspense is a little redundant at this point.

Yes, Disney are moving forward on a remake of the much-loved 1986 family flick, FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR, and have been for quite some time. Trevorrow has been hired to write, and might possibly direct the film, with the studio hoping for franchise potential (naturally).

The story certainly sits well thematically with the writer/director’s debut movie, and it’s not like we were ever going to get a sequel, so what’s to lose? We’re just thankful those STAR WARS rumours proved false. (No offence intended, can’t wait for SNG personally, but it just didn’t feel right to hand such a colossal responsibility to someone so new.)
