It’s been rumoured for a while, but now it’s official: Michael Dougherty will be directing Godzilla 2.

Variety broke the news, with the Trick ‘r Treat helmer to direct the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla. The sequel will be part of the setup for the already-confirmed Godzilla vs. Kong movie that will see two of cinema’s most legendary behemoths coming together to butt heads.

Godzilla 2 is currently set for a March 22nd, 2019 release, which will follow this March’s Kong: Skull Island. Legendary and Warner Bros. have confirmed that both of these films will take place in the same “ecosystem” as Edwards’ Godzilla, and that this is all leading to the aforementioned Godzilla vs. Kong, which is penciled in for May 2020.

No particular plot details are known on Godzilla 2 just yet, although obviously we can expect to see Big G causing chaos as he ultimately heads towards that crossover meeting with King Kong.
