There’s been plenty of rumblings to say that C-lister extraordinaire The Tinkerer was to be a secondary villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and now comes confirmation on who’ll be playing the rogue.

Deadline has word that Orange is the New Black’s Michael Chernus will be playing Phineas Mason, aka The Tinkerer. Previous reports claimed that the villain will play a significant role in the film as he’ll help the film’s ‘big bad’, Michael Keaton’s Vulture, to put together his supervillain outfit using Chitauri technology left over from the Battle of New York.

In the comic book realm, The Tinkerer debuted back in 1963, being, like so many characters of that time, a creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The rogue is famous for designing many a gadget or piece of tech to be used in nefarious ways by the likes of Scorpion, Mysterio, Black Cat, and plenty of other Spidey villains.

Chernus joins a cast that currently includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, Kenneth Choi as the President of Midtown High, Zendaya as a female lead known as Michelle, and then unknown roles for Donald Glover, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Barbieri, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, Jacob Batalon, Tyne Daly, and Bokeem Woodbine. It was previously reported that Logan Marshall-Green’s role was likely to be that of The Tinkerer, but that’s now obviously not the case.

To be directed by Cop Car’s Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently set for a July 7th, 2017 release.
